March 21/22, 2013 Block Days, Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride

Essential Question: What are style devices, and how are they achieved with cinematic techniques?

1. Do Now: Quiz ( 8 minutes )
Using any notes that you have, explain in writing the following style devices in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands and how these are achieved, specifically, with cinematic techniques ( that you also identify):

a. Imagery
b. Point of View
c. Organization
d. Tone

2. We will watch the last minutes of Edward Scissorhands for those classes (3. 5 & 6) that did not get to finish it yesterday.

  • Take notes below today’s quiz.
  • Use a two column graphic organizer, as we have used recently, with a column entitled “style device” and another entitled “cinematic technique”. You will write the specifics of both.
3. Draw a line below your last entry, as we will continue this exercise with  Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride (35 minutes).

4. Whole Group: Review the specifics of the embedded assessment #2 assignment and rubric on pages 181-183 (5 minutes).

a. Rough Draft Revisions. You will be handed back your recently completed rough draft and other assignments related to this Unit.

b. Please staple together the graded rough draft and all “notes” and other materials that are “Evidence of the Writing Process” defined in the rubric for this assessment.

5. Peer Review (14 minutes/14 minutes): With the use of your laptop in class, revise your rough draft.

  • Proof read it.

  • Have a partner in class read your essay and evaluate it using the rubric on page 182-183.

  • In response to your partner’s essay, score it using the rubric provided. Put your name on this rubric and the name of the person you are scoring. Write a score in each box provided. Identify one point in writing that justifies, in your thinking, this score. Give this to the person whose essay you have scored.

  • Staple this “peer review” to your packet of papers. Use this “peer review” to revise your essay.

6. Exit Ticket (4 minutes): Rate your progress on your essay. Tell what you don’t understand, do understand, or agree or disagree with in the responses to your essay?

    1. A) Snowball: A very quick talker and quite inventive, but not as well known as Napoleon.

Napoleon: One of the fiercest pigs on the farm, has a strong reputation of getting what he wants(most likely because of his fierceness and large size) and he has a very strong character.

Squealer: A short little fat pig that loved to talk. He is the best speaker out of all of them. He is very persuasive and is very good at arguing.

The pigs collectively have become more and more against humans and they are becoming the rulers of the farm (slowly becoming totalitarians).

      B) I think that the significance of the Beasts of England anthem is to rally support for their goal, to give them hope that they will be ruled no longer. It could be compared to our national anthem for we sing it at every sporting event like they sing it after every meeting. The danger is that they could become to proud of themselves and become more and more hostile and hateful towards humans. They may become mad with power.

      C) Moses is Mr. Jones' pet raven that liked to tell stories to the animals and spy on them.

Rasputin was a Russian monk that had healed the tzar Nicholas' II son of hemophilia. After, the Tzar had said that Rasputin had become their friend and holy man, just like how Moses and Mr. Jones had become friends

This reminds of the song "Rasputin"

    "RA RA RASPUTIN
    Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
    RA RA RASPUTIN
    Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on."

a.) The pigs are the leaders on the farm, and despite the fact "all animals are equals" the pigs are the leaders of the farm.
b.)"Beasts of England" is the anthem for the farm, and the animals sing it often. This song is the inspiration of the farm as well. I would compare this song to the National Anthem, or the Pledge of Allegiance which are the songs or sayings America is influenced by.
c.) Moses spreads stories around the farm of a place called Sugarcandy Mountain where the animals go when they die. Rasputin and Moses connect because Moses represents religion, and Rasputin was involved in the Russian Orthodox Church.

    A. The pigs are the leaders of the farm. They keep all the other animals in line and make sure they are doing there job. They basically keep things running and take charge, so that is why they are the leaders.

    B. The song they sing "Beasts of England" you could say makes them feel proud and it is their inspiration. I think you could compare this to the Pledge of Allegiance. We say it everyday at school because it is so important, like "Beasts of England" is to the animals.

    C. The raven Moses tells the animals stories and Moses spys on the animals. Rasputin was a monk and he became friends with the Tzar by healing his son. This relates to Moses because he is friends with Mr. Jones.

    a) The 3 pigs are Napoleon, Squeeler, and Snowball. Snowball and Napoleon are the 2 head pigs and Squeeler just follows what they do. The pigs are the head of the farm, and the most intelligent and literate.
b)The song "Beast of England" is an inspiration to the animals, and its their guide in the revolution. I would compare it to our National Anthem. The song makes us proud about our country like "Beasts of England" makes them proud of the farm.
c)Moses the raven spies on the animals and tells them stories. he was a friend of Jones, the farmer. Rasputin was a wanderer who came to Czar Nicholas II because Rasputin was a healer and Czar's son was sick. Czar and Rasputin became friends, like Moses and Jones did. They needed each other. Moses and Rasputin are alike because they both become friends with the head person and they are both suspicious.

    a) The pigs, being Napolean, Snowball, and Squealer, are what you could say are the leaders of this "revolution." They're in charge, and keep all the animals in line and make sure they know what's going on. They are the smartest and most intellectual of all the animals.

    b) The song "Beasts of England" is the farm's anthem. It is the inspiration of the farm and expresses their intentions and desires. It is a fuel system for their hope. I would compare it to the Star Spangled Banner, the United State's National anthem. It is what we use to represent our country, and how it is now free from British rule, and we are an independent nation.

    c) Moses is a raven, who tells many stories and spies on all the animals of the farm. Rasputin was a monk who healed the son of Czar Nicholas II. Rasputin gained the Czar's trust and friendship, just as Moses did with farmer Jones. Moses and Rasputin are similar because they both befriended the man in charge.

    Animal Farm EQ Questions

    A. The pigs have made themselves the leaders of the farm and make all the important decisions. They do little to no physical work. They live in the farmer’s house.

    B. It is a patriotic type song that keeps people united, on the same track, and working hard. I would say that this is a lot like our national anthem. It is one form of propaganda and can be used to influence people or sway their opinions in a negative way.

    C. Moses speaks about mystical/imaginary places like Sugarcandy Mountain. He is given an allowance of beer by the pigs, even though he doesn’t do any work. Rasputin was given an allowance/payment by the Russian Monarchy. He spoke about mystical/imaginary things, along with his supposed healing powers.

  11. 1. On the Jones Farm there have come three pigs and a boar. (A boar is practically a pig) The three pig's names are Napoleon, Snowball, and Squealer. The boar's name is Old Major.
Old Major is the boar that has the dream that sparks the rebellion and the one that taught the song "Beasts of England." Shortly after he does so, he dies. The death of the prize winning boar leaves Snowball and Napoleon to try and capture the rains on the rule of the farm. Napoleon is the one to come out as the leader, coming out as the one with more power in a viscous way. Snowball is obviously the one that challenges him but in a more subtle approach, using kindness. Squealer the last of the pigs is the one that smooths things over when it comes to the crops being lavished on the pigs and spreads false information, anything to keep the pigs in political control.

    2. The tune "Beasts Of England" serves as the anthem for the farm animals, I guess you could say it's there theme song. The song kept the animals united and could be seen negatively because it could influence things in a negative way. It could alter decisions or influence opinions later on.

    3. Moses is a raven that spies on the farm animals and tells them made up stories about a place called SugarCandy Mountain. Moses was the pet or rather friend of the Farmer. This relates to Rasputin because he healed the Tsar's son and then they become friends.

  12. A) The pigs that are given in Animal Farm have been given the traits of scientists. Ones that can agree with their leader(s) and will never disobey.

    B) “Beasts of England” is a song for the Animals. The word beasts means animals. So the correct name of the song would be “Animals of England”. Beasts of England can be compared to us because we have our own song of our land.

    C) Moses is a animal form of Rasputin who wants to overthrow the leader of Animal Farm and take control of the Farm.

  13. a. The pigs at the farm in Animal Farm show traits of being leaders and being more intelligent animals.

    b. "Beast" means animal or creature, so "Beasts of England" could also mean "Animals of England". this is comparable to the animals on the farm. it's their patriotic song.

    c. Moses is a raven who was kind of friends with the farmer. This is relatable to Rasputin, because Rasputin became friends with the Czar of Russia by healing his son. The farmer is the czar, and the raven moses is the Rasputin.

  15. Snowball - Snowball is the intellectual one that cares about the animal’s wellbeing and equality. He sets up committees to help the animals learn to read and write. He helped manage the military that they set up, and he was Napoleon’s scape goat. He is the equivalent to Leon Trotsky.
Napoleon is a cunning and devious pig. He doesn’t particularly care about the wellbeing of others. He took 9 puppies and told the mothers that he was going to “educate” them privately. This was a front to make the nine puppies attack dogs (or KGB agents). He is the equivalent to Josef Stalin.
Squealer is a follower. He’s good at speeches, but not much else. He spreads what Napoleon says. He is the equivalent to the newspaper “Pravda”.

The Beasts of England is either their National Anthem or is a bar song, sung by drunks. This could be used badly because if you pledge your allegiance then you could be blackmailed into doing something for your country, or in this case the farm, and do something “for the good of all”.

Rasputin was a prophet-healer that the Czar brought in to heal his son, Alexei. Alexei had hemophilia and this is bad. Rasputin befriended Czar Nicolas II, helped Alexei recover, and separated the Czar from his people. Moses is connected to him because not only is his namesake also a prophet, but Jones, the equivalent of Czar Nicolas II, had entitled Moses as his favorite pet, like the Czar was close friends with Rasputin.

  17. Napoleon is a smart, sly pig, and is able to swing animals to his favor. He is the equivalence of Josef Stalin. Squealer just spreads what Napoleon wants the animals to know, and gives speeches. He is the equivalence of a newspaper. Snowball is the equivalence of Leon Trotsky, but cares deeply for the other animals and their abilities. He even helps them learn to read and write.
